The Nuclear Power Institute is a statewide partnership led by the Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) and headquartered at Texas A&M University.
Mission
The mission of the Nuclear Power Institute is to develop the high-tech workforce needed by an expanding nuclear industry in Texas and the nation.
The Workforce Need
The nuclear industry provides stable, well-paying jobs essential to our nation’s energy future.
- Eight new reactors approved or in construction in Texas
- 31 new plants already approved nationwide by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission
- Each plant will need up to 450 skilled workers with technical backgrounds—two-thirds of these will require an associate’s degree from a community/junior college with specialization in
- Nuclear power plant systems,
- Radiation protection, or
- Digital instrumentation and control.
- Also needed: engineers with undergraduate degrees in
- Nuclear engineering,
- Mechanical engineering,
- Chemical engineering,
- Electrical engineering, and
- Engineering technology and engineering physics,with an understanding of nuclear power plant technology.
Working with our partners and sponsors, NPI is meeting all of these needs.
Our Partners
NPI has developed educational programs now in place at universities, high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools. Other key partners include science and math teachers, state government, federal agencies, and elected and civic leaders.
