STUDENT HIGHLIGHT: Student leaders take education to D.C.
January 7, 2013
Glen Rose High School students Jacqui Condy, president of POWER
SET and Ben Coppock, president of WIT, recently returned from a
trip to Washington, D.C. where they had the rare opportunity to see
some behind the scenes meetings at the U.S. House of
Representatives offices.
Sponsored by the Nuclear Power Institute (NPI) at Texas A&M,
Jacqui and Ben, along with POWER SET advisor Reci Brooks and County
Judge Mike Ford, attended a panel discussion and reception on "The
Role of Research Universities in Nuclear Science, Energy and
Policy."
Brooks said the trip was an opportunity for students to
experience the workings of the federal government and also gain
valuable insight into the most current information in the nuclear
field. They met with several congressmen, including Representative
Bill Flores and also met Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel
Poneman.
Panel members and federal officials were interested to learn
more about POWER SET and WIT and what kind of impact they have on
students entering STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)
fields.
